Good Eli and Bad Eli – DYKS Week 6 Picks

The “Do You Know Sports” guys (DYKS) had a much better showing last week with half of the league finishing above .500. Jay Fitts aka “Fittsy” had a great week for the guest’s going 3-1 and if it weren’t for the Seattle Seahawks 4th quarter collapse would had been perfect.

The best week went again to Greenwell 39 with a 4-1 record. Greeny was a beneficiary of that awful collapse from the Seahags as he had the Bengals. (I will no longer call them the Bungles until they prove otherwise this season.)

The Giants were the Sunday night prime time game and with the “Stealing Land from Native American Indians” holiday also known as Columbus Day the next day, I was able to enjoy the game a beverage or two or three. The running log for this Giants prime time game at least had a happy ending this time.

I get the kids showered and off to bed and get an email 10 minutes prior to game time from NY Fan.

NY Fan: Big game Giants tonight

JB: This game scares me this is the type of game the Giants lose.

1st Quarter

The Giants have a nice drive going and on third and short from the goal line, Andre Williams comes up short. A year and almost a half of Andre Willimas as the short yardage guy and the results have not been good.

JB: After almost a year and half of Andre Williams as a short yardage back I think I have seen enough. I would rather leave Jennings in or go spread with Vereen.

NY Fan: Agreed. Go with spread – more options and Odell.

The first quarter is almost over and the it appears “good” Eli has shown up for the Niners. The Giants have a 3rd and 9 and instead of letting the quarter run Eli gets the offense to the line and runs a play catching the Niners with 12 men on the field. A big play to help start the 2nd quarter with a manageable 3rd and 4 play. Thank you good “Eli”.

2nd Quarter

A new commercial for airline “Fly Emirites” and I am sold. The plane looks spacious, comfortable and relaxed. Does every flight have Jennifer Aniston? After recent flights where I am smushed in the back of the plane with 3 kids, changing diapers like a contortionist and servings as a human pillow, I don’t even need Aniston just give me the space.

The Giants again with a short distance goal line situation. No Andre Williams the Giants spread the field and score on a short pass to Vereen. Tom Coughlin has apparently seen enough form Andre Willimas in short yardage, that must of been tough for him to pull the plug on the Boston College guy. I suspect Coughlin has a soft spot for the B.C. players.

The Giants defense is swarming to the ball and gang tackling. They look much faster and nastier than last year. Heck they look faster and nastier than week 2.

Al Michaels may have a gambling problem. He just suggested that Odell Beckham become a jai alai player. Al usually references gambling as he does the play by play but it appears he wants to rig a jai alai match. I do agree Odell Beckham would crush it in jai alai.

Dwayne Harris has been great for the Giants return game and an upgrade over Preston Parker in the slot. The really miss Victor Cruz in that spot it’s a big hole in the offense. (Later on in the game Odell Beckham and Rueben Randle go down and Cruz missing is even a bigger hole.)

A commercial break and one of the best commercials I have seen in awhile by KIA. A Dad is walking off the football field to the car with his young son and he’s checking out the trophy from the awards ceremony. He looks at the trophy with a strange face and reads “Participant”. The Dad looks around “Participant? We won every game.” He rips off the participant plate on the trophy and writes in with a sharpie “Champion”. The only improvement would be if they showed all the other team’s Dad’s leaving the “Participant” trophies on the roof of the car as they drove away.

About 1 minute left in the half and I get an bad feeling about Eli. I need to email NY Fan.

JB: I have this ugly feeling Eli is going to throw a pick 6 in this spot.

Moments later while driving Eli throws a pick in the end zone stopping the Giants from getting any points from the end of the half drive. There has been a “Bad” Eli appearance. Let’s hope it’s the last one of the game.

NY Fan: Great call. Eli is a moron.

3rd Quarter

I must of been hitting the beer pretty hard this quarter, I took only three notes the whole quarter. Eli Manning and dumb interceptions sometimes cause this reaction.

  • Giants defense getting shredded.
  • 49ers Colin Kaepernick looks like a competent Quarterback.
  • Scratch that last one Kaepernick just wasted a timeout at the end of the quarter when he could of just let time run out.

4th Quarter

Colin Kaepernick is looking good again at quarterback, the 49ers just tied the game 20-20. The Niners are a much rougher roller coaster ride than anything I rode earlier in the day at Universal Studios in Orlando.

Odell Beckham just pulled up lame with a hamstring injury. The good news is UConn alum Geremy Davis is going to get some snaps. Larry Donnell just caught a pass and he looks like he’s going to fumble the ball even when he’s wrapping it up with two hands. Is this the familiar 4th quarter slide.

Cris Collinsworth keeps chirping about how the Niners are trying to make Eli move from the pocket and throw. This is looking like a terrible strategy as Eli seems like he’s completing 80% of his passes.

Odell Beckham is constantly shown on the sideline and all I can envision is Side Show Bob from the Simpsons. The mixture of beer, sun, spending the day at Universal and the Krusty Burger I ate while visiting Universal’s replica of Springfield must be getting to me at this late hour.

Giants field goal with 4:30 left in the game and a bad feeling is creeping in that by the end of this game every team in the NFC East is going to be deadlocked at 2-3. The division has a feel like 7-9 will win the crown.

The Giants take the lead with a field goal and the kickoff is another touchback. Why does the NFL even bother with kickoff’s it seems like every kick is a touchback? The team that gets scored on should just get the ball on their 20 yard line.

The Niners drive to the goal line. Will the Giants make another big goal line stand? Landon Collins just had a sure interception go through his hands. Every time I see that jersey I think of former Giant Mark Collins another defensive back from almost 30 years ago. The Niners aren’t effing around now, they give the ball to Carlos Hyde, he plunges into the end zone and now lead by 4 with 1:41 left in the game.

Things look bleak. I email NY Fan.

JB: Eli is all they got. No Odell, no Randall, no Cruz. This is all Eli and Vereen down the stretch.

Shane Vereen makes a big catch and run. Why are the Niners not doubling him everywhere he goes?

NY Fan:  Vereen. I may have a heart attack.

Nooooooooo! ELi just got picked. Great “Bad” Eli is back. Wait, maybe it’s not a pick. It’s not a pick! Another life. You have to love replay, if your a Giants fan at least.

Eli to Vereeen, he takes the ball to the 20 yard line 30 seconds left.

Odell back in the game. Eli to Odell it looks like interference, there is a flag on the play. Is it interference and ball on the one or the wimpy call of holding with 5 yards and an automatic first down? Apparently none of the above, the call is interference and the Giants get the ball on the 7 yard line. Why? No explanation from Collinsworth on this one.

Holy Schnikes, Larry Donnell with a great catch in the back of the end zone. Looked like a bobble. Will it stand up to the replay? The Giants should just throw to Donnell when he is in the end zone this way he doesn’t have to run with the ball and fumble it away, keep it simple catch and score. The referee is back, no bobble, the touchdown stands. G-Men with a three point lead. Yes, “Good” Eli.

The only question now is if the Giants can survive the last 21 seconds without coughing up the lead? They do and they are now alone in first place with a 3-2 record. The Giants and prime time games, I can’t wait until the next one. The wait will not be to long it’s this Monday night versus the Eagles.

After some technical difficulties earlier in the week and some scrambling around on Friday the podcast is up and running. You can find this weeks episode on ITunes in the podo
