MLB Picks Aug 29-Sept. 1

Red Sox over Rays Part of the Red Sox Killer P’s, Rick Porcello is at home where he is 12-0. he started April hot 5-0, cooled a bit in May (4.65 ERA) and June (3.96 ERA) but has been incredible post all-star break with 2.41 ERA, a .193 batting average against and a 6-1 record. He is also 3-0 against Tampa in 4 starts and in the no decesion he pitched well enough to win but the Sox bats were asleep. Matt Andriese pitched well at the start of the year and then was bounced from the rotation to bullpen. His return to the rotation in August has not gone well with a 0-3 record, 6.48 ERA. Killer P with Lucky win number 13 in this one.
Tigers/White Sox over Runs Matt Boyd pitched just well enough in his last start to beat the Twinkies White Sox have killed him in 2 starts for 9 runs on 12 hits in 8+ innings. James Shields has given up 11 homers in his last 4 starts. Detroit faced him just prior to that run and didn’t homer but scored 6 runs on 9 hits. Detroit now has 15 runs on 25 hits in 3 games against Shields this year. Take the over in runs.
Cardinals over Brewers I was riding Carlos Martinez for most of June and July but faded him in August. Good thing too, the Cards lost his first 3 starts of the month. His last 2 starts have him back on my radar with 15 innings pitched, 2 runs allowed and just 7 hits. The Brewers Zach Davies wishes August was over. The Dog Days have bit him hard to a tune of 5.86 ERA and a .314 batting average against. Take the Cards in this one.
Reds/Angels under runs The Reds have won the last 8 Dan Straily starts. He has a higher ERA on the Road 4.27 ERA vs. 2.94 ERA. The damage in that away splits was done back in May mostly and he is a much different pitcher than that time. Matt Shoemaker has been very good in his past 2 starts allowing only 2 runs on 8 hits in 13 innings of work. Take the under in runs. You might consider taking the under in the first 5 innings because of that lovely Reds bullpen.
Tuesday Aug 30th
Rangers over Mariners Cole Hamels is 2-0 against the M’s this year, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits in 14 inninngs. The Mariners are 3-7 in James Paxton’s last 10 starts. He pitched once against Texas and thres 6+ shut out innings. A must game for the M’s but the Rangers also want this game and series badly to put the final nail in the coffin for Seattle’s AL West title dreams. Take Texas.
Cardinals over Brewers Adam Wainwright has been flat out terrible in August with a 7.50 ERA in 5 starts. He is going to shake it off against the Brewers and Wily Peralta. He has been actually pretty good since joining the rotation in August. The Cardinals are however a team that hits ol’ Wily pretty well with 8 runs in 10 innings and a .400 batting average against. Just what the Cards and Adam Wainwright need to get going.
Wednesday Aug 31st
Red Sox/Rays under runs I was at Steven Wright’s return from the DL last Friday in Fenway, He lacked control and feel in the first inning but as the game went along he started to find that rythm he had prior to the all-star break. He had much more success when he took something off the ball and threw that knuckler under 70 mph. Drew Smyly is 3-0 in 5 games in August with a 3.03 ERA. His best month since April, the same month he beat the Sox 3-0 with an 8 inning 1 hitter in Boston. He has owned Boston the previous 3 years also going 3-1 with a 1.04 ERA and a .185 batting average against in 7 starts. This will be a low scoring affair take the under in runs.
Indians over Twins The Indians have won Cory Kluber’s last 6 starts. After having an ERA above 4 in May and June his last three months have been sub 3. The Twins were one of those teams that got to Kluber early in the season. He has done well against Minnesoa in the past. Pat Dean’s return to the rotation was f-ugly, giving up 6 runs in 3 innings. This is a terrible match up for the Twinkies, take the Indians.
Thursday Sept 1st
White Sox/Twins under runs Jose Quintana has a 1.91 ERA after the all-star break. He has given up just 7 runs in 26+ innings this year. The Twins Ervin Santana has been better than that since the break with a 1.89 ERA. That includes the 6 run shit show at Toronto on Saturday. He has had some trouble this year with the White Sox but this will still be a low scoring game, take the under runs.
