MLB Picks
Friday Sept. 2nd
Red Sox over A’s The Red Sox have won David Price’s last 5 starts after losing the previous 5. The past 3 years he has an ERA under 2 against Oakland in 2 starts with a .193 batting average against. Rookie Zach Neal goes for the ‘s and in 10 games as a reliever he had a respectable 3.02 ERA but in his 5 starts he has a 6.39 ERA and an opponent OPS of .853. Take David Price to even out that 5 game losing skid by winning his 5th start in a row. Andrew Triggs is now starting for Neal. He has pitched in 23 games for the Athletics this year. The A’s have lost 21 of those games.
Cubs over Giants The Dodgers made Jon Lester work in his last start throwing 98 pitches in 6 innings of work. The Dodgers got the Cubs bullpen for the 1-0 win. Lester will try to replicate his August sub 2 ERA and beat the Giants who got to him pretty good earlier this year. Matt Cain struggled in his rehab return and despite beating the CUbs earlier this year he has struggled against CHicago the previous 3 seasons. Take Lester and the Cubs.
Twins over White Sox Kyle Gibson has been pretty much terrible all season except when he faces the WHite SOx. In 2 starts this year he has given up 1 earned run (3 total) in 12 innings pitched. Those stats are not good for just this year he is 5-0 in his career against the pale hose with an ERA of about 2 and a batting average agaisnt that is under .200. Carlos Rondon gave up a total of 6 runs in 5 August starts for a 1.47 ERA. Minnesota has however reached him for 9 runs in 18 innings over 3 starts. Last year in 2 starts the Twinkies batted over .300 ab=aginst Rondon. In a surprise take the Twinkies to win a game.
Saturday Sept. 3rd
Astros over Rangers (stay away pitching changes from both teams) Doug Fister has respectable stats against the Rangers this year allowing only 4 runs in 18 innings. The Rangers have hit him at a .294 clip though so he has some wiggled out of some trouble in those innings. Colby Lewis is scheduled to pitch for the Rangers and has struggled in his minor league rehab starts. I am taking the Astros as Colby Lewis might have trouble shaking off the rust from that shoulder injury.
Mariners over Angels Matt Shoemaker has won his last 3 starts allowing 2 runs or less in each game. Seattle has tagged him for 12 runs in 17 innings however this year. The 3 previous season though he has held the M’s in check with a .204 batting average against. Tiajuan Walker has given up 18 runs in his past 4 starts. One of those starts was against the Angels that somehow managed to lose that game 8-6. Weird stat of the day, the previous three years Walker has struck out 20 Angels without issuing a walk. In the one game this year he struck out none and walked 2. I am going to assume that one start this year was an abberation and Walker will return to his dominating ways over the Angels.
Red Sox over A’s I like the Killer P, Rick Porcello just like Carlos Martinez. I am going to keep riding the #3 starter for the Sox (behind Buchholz and Price) until he proves otherwise. He is also undefeated against Oakland the last 3 years. The A’s are currently undesided but it could be Zach Neal who pitched well against the Cardinals last week gets a tougher line up in this go around.
Sunday Sept. 4th
Cardinals over Reds I am back to taking Carlos Martinez when he starts again. He has won his past 3 and has thrown under 100 pitches in each so he is being managed well down the stretch. He is 4-1 against the Reds in his career including a win this year. Tim Adelman has 7 career starts and has done a decent job. He doesn’t last long though so the Cardinals will get to feast on that Reds bullpen in this one.I am going to keeping riding the horse Martinez until he kicks me off, take the Cards.

College Picks
Thu Sept 1
Indiana Hoosiers -9 over Florida International Golden Panthers Indiana lost the QB and RB from the best offense in the Big 10 last year to the NFL. Good news is they have players ready and able to step in. Florida International has an experienced coach in Ron Turner and a potent offense but their defense is a sieve and will not be able to stop Indiana. Take the Hoosiers.
Fri Sept 2
Colorado Buffaloes -8 over Colorado State Rams The Buffaloes have 18 returning starters. The past 2 years they have lost 8 Pac 12 games by 7 or less points. They add an offensive coordinator from Texas Tech and they might be a bit more explosive on offense. The Rams fought back from down 14 to lose last year when a field goal was blocked and the Buffaloes turned around and kicked a game winner. The Rams lost a running back and their quarterback to the NFL. Their defensive coordinator from last year is now the head coach at Georgia Southern. Neutral site game in Denver but the experience and talent of the Buffaloes should be enough to cover the 8 point spread.
Sat Sept 3
Boise St. Broncos -20 over Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns Boise State might be one of the best teams in the country by the end of the year. If they can beat Pac 12 opponents Washington St. and Oregon St. they could run the table until the Big West Championship game. The Ragin Cajuns are a pretty good team but not in the same ball park as Boise State. The only worry is the Broncos melting in a noon time start in Louisiana. Take the Broncos.
Penn State Nittany Lions -21.5 over Kent State Golden Flashes Penn State has a really good running game returning and get the right opponent to open the season. Kent State has gone 11 straight scoreless quarters against Penn State. Lay the 21.5 without blinking an eye.
Georgia Bulldogs -2.5 over North Carolina Tar Heels North Carolina went 11-1 last year and gave Clemson a little push in the ACC tournament. Georgia has a new look with Kirby Smart at Head Coach and return running back Nick Chubb. This appears like it will be a close one but I think Kirby Smart might have picked up something from those years at Alabama and will have the Georgia defense clicking on all cylinders. The Bulldogs will win by a field goal or more.
